A dot after a note adds half its value. A dotted quarter (♩.) = 1½ beats. A dotted half = 3 beats.

Connects two notes of the same pitch. Only the first is struck — the sound lasts the combined value of both notes.

♯ Sharp
Raises a note by one half step (semitone). On the piano, it's the black key immediately to the right of the named note.
♭ Flat
Lowers a note by one half step (semitone). On the piano, it's the black key immediately to the left of the named note.
♮ Natural
Cancels any previous sharp or flat, returning the note to its original, unaltered pitch.
